The Atlanta Falcons have completed a second interview with James Liipfert as part of their ongoing search for a new general manager. The process follows the departure of Terry Fontenot after the 2025 season. Falcons President of Football Matt Ryan is leading the search, with support from ZRG Partners and Sportsology Group.

“We’re looking for people that work well together,” Ryan said at his introductory press conference. “And that doesn’t mean best friends. You’ve got to have a professional and really strong working relationship. And sometimes that comes with seeing things a little bit differently. But the best of the best find ways to get to common ground.

“As we go through both of these searches, both the head coach and the GM, as we’re going along that lane at the same time, that’s what we’re looking for. We’re looking to find two people that we feel like are excellent in their role and what they’re asked to do but also can provide a really strong working relationship together.”

The Falcons recently hired Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach on January 17. With this position filled, attention has shifted toward selecting a general manager.

Liipfert’s first interview took place on January 22, followed by a second interview on January 29. He currently serves as assistant general manager for the Houston Texans, having been promoted in 2025 after joining the organization in 2018. During his tenure, Houston made five postseason appearances in eight years and advanced to this season’s divisional round with a 12-5 record.

Before his time with Houston, Liipfert worked nine seasons with the New England Patriots in various scouting roles between 2009 and 2017. While there, he was part of teams that won nine AFC East titles, four AFC championships, and two Super Bowls.

The Falcons play in Atlanta, Georgia and compete in the National Football League’s NFC South Division official website. Founded as an expansion franchise in 1965 official website, they have appeared in two Super Bowls—in 1998 and again in 2016 official website. Freddie the Falcon is recognized as their mascot official website.

The team will continue announcing interviews upon completion with each candidate during its search for new leadership.
