The Atlanta Falcons have outlined a focused plan for their No. 15 overall draft pick, Jalon Walker, as he enters his first year with the team. Rather than immediately tapping into his versatility, the Falcons have decided to place Walker solely in the edge rushers’ room for now. This strategy was confirmed by defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich before Walker’s practice debut at the three-day rookie minicamp.
“On first and second down, I want, especially Jalon, to really have an opportunity to just master playing on the edge because I think that there’s something there that’s really special,” Ulbrich stated during the draft. He emphasized giving Walker a specific role initially to help him develop his skills before exploring more creative uses of his talents on third downs.
Walker’s versatility was a significant factor in the Falcons’ decision to draft him. Both head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot praised this trait after selecting him in Round 1. “The kid’s makeup, obviously, is unique (with) all the things he can do,” Morris noted.
Fontenot added: “The way you can move him around and do a lot of different things. He can play stack, he can play off the edge, he can rush inside.”
Ulbrich’s decision aims to ease Walker’s transition by allowing him to focus on one aspect of his role where he could be most beneficial for Atlanta’s defense. The Falcons have bolstered their defensive front this offseason with several new players known for their pass-rushing abilities, including fellow rookie Jalon Pearce Jr., veteran Leonard Floyd from free agency, and defensive lineman Morgan Fox.
These additions join existing team members like outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie and insider linebacker Kaden Elliss who had multiple sacks last season. Inside linebackers coach Barrett Ruud stressed caution in utilizing Walker’s versatility too soon: “You really have to be careful with a guy like him…the more he moves around, it changes what other people are doing as well.”
At only 21 years old, Walker has ample time ahead in his career with Atlanta to expand his skill set further while initially focusing on mastering one position at a time.
“I love that,” Walker said about focusing on playing on the edge this season. “Good with me. I’m excited to embrace that role.”
