FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — As Father’s Day is celebrated, reflections on the influence of fathers come to light. One such story involves Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who recently shared insights into the impact his father, Michael Penix Sr., has had on his life and career.

“My dad, that’s my hero,” Penix Jr. stated. “… I feel like I couldn’t have got as far without him, so it’s a blessing to be able to have somebody like that in my life.”

Penix Sr., known for his athletic achievements at Tennessee Tech as a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection at running back from 1992-95, instilled important lessons in his son from an early age. He was inducted into the Tennessee Tech Hall of Fame in 2024.

A particular lesson that stands out for Penix Jr. took place during a youth all-star baseball game when he forgot his belt. Despite finding a replacement with the help of teammates, his father refused to let him play.

“He was just teaching me discipline,” Penix Jr. recalled. “You’ve got to be able to take care of your stuff.”

This experience taught him about preparation and responsibility—traits essential not only for athletes but also for success in various aspects of life.

“It’s crazy, you know? I didn’t even need a belt, but it was part of our uniform,” said Penix Jr., highlighting how seemingly minor details can hold significant value.

The story serves as a reminder that while talent is valuable, hard work and preparation are crucial differentiators as one progresses through life.

“He did everything for me,” added Penix Jr., emphasizing how his father’s guidance and discipline shaped him both personally and professionally.

As families celebrate Father’s Day, stories like this underscore the vital role parents play in imparting wisdom and shaping future generations.
