CCSD Student Graduates from Air Force JROTC Flight Academy

A Cherokee County School District student is taking flight after graduating from an elite program!

Cherokee High School senior and Air Force JROTC Cadet Col. Lexi Ly completed the AFJROTC Flight Academy with “flying colors,” according to instructors.

Through the summer program at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Lexi earned her private pilot’s certificate, continuing her path toward becoming a military pilot.  She also earned one of the fastest oral exam times in the program’s history.

“Congratulations to Lexi on this impressive accomplishment,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “We’re so proud of her dedication to the Air Force JROTC program and her plans to serve our country.  We wish her an outstanding senior year of continued success!”

The Flight Academy is an eight-week summer program designed for Air Force JROTC cadets to improve the recruitment, retention and diversity of the Air Force and aviation industry.

“I started off dreaming of people one day saying ‘thank you for your service,’ as they often do to my dad,” said Lexi, whose father is an Army veteran.  “That dream grew into being someone people look up to, perhaps a hero of sorts.  Ultimately, my dream always ended with me being a pilot, fighting for my country and being a hero; that’s how it all began for me.  When the Flight Academy seemed within reach, I realized perhaps my dreams weren’t that unattainable.”

Senior Master Sgt. (Ret.) Jeffrey Bise serves as the instructor for Cherokee High School’s Air Force JROTC program.

“A self-driven cadet, Lexi knows what she wants and goes after it,” he said, noting she also has earned world championship titles in martial arts.  “If she pursues a career in the military, she will make an outstanding officer and, of course, a pilot!”
