State Representative Jordan Ridley (R-Woodstock) has proposed House Bill 1025, a piece of legislation designed to offer a homestead tax exemption for seniors in the Cherokee County School District. The lawmakers underscore that this legislative initiative is a response to the current inflation rates.
In a press release issued by the Georgia General Assembly, Ridley stated: "Our senior citizens deserve a break from ad valorem taxes. With record-high inflation increasing the financial burden on residents across the state, it is my hope that this legislation will bring vital relief to our taxpayers. I look forward to advancing this bill through the legislative process and sending it to the governor’s desk to be signed into law this session."
As per House Bill 1025, the bill specifically provides a homestead exemption from Cherokee County School District ad valorem taxes for certain residents aged 62 or over, with annual incomes not exceeding $16,000. The suggested amendments include a full-value exemption for senior and disabled residents, a residency requirement, and the introduction of a local ballot referendum for approval. The Act is set to become effective upon receiving a two-thirds majority vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
As indicated on Ridley's campaign website, Ridley was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and represents District 22, which includes areas in Cherokee and Cobb counties. Currently serving as Secretary of the Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications Committee, he also participates in the Code Revision and Public Safety and Homeland Security committees.
