Falcons complete interview with Jeff Ulbrich for defensive coordinator role

The Atlanta Falcons have concluded an interview with Jeff Ulbrich for the position of defensive coordinator, according to an announcement made by the team on Wednesday. This marks the second official interview conducted by the Falcons, following their discussion with University of Michigan's defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale on Tuesday.

Jeff Ulbrich is not only being considered by the Falcons but also has interest from other teams. The New York Jets completed an interview with him for their head coach position earlier this week. Ulbrich served as their interim head coach starting from Week 6 in 2024 after Robert Saleh was dismissed, leading the team to a 3-9 record.

Ulbrich's coaching history includes his time with the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2020. He began as a linebackers coach and later took on additional responsibilities as assistant head coach in 2020. Following Dan Quinn's departure as head coach, Ulbrich was promoted to defensive coordinator for the remaining games of that season.

In New York, he was initially appointed as Saleh's defensive coordinator in 2021 and continued until taking over as interim head coach in 2024. During his tenure, the Jets' defense experienced significant improvements, particularly between 2021 and 2022 when they rose to fourth place in points and yards allowed after previously ranking last.

However, Ulbrich's first year with the Jets presented challenges, with the defense finishing poorly in league rankings. Additionally, his previous collaboration with current Falcons head coach Raheem Morris may be viewed both positively and negatively. They worked together closely during their time at Atlanta from 2015-20 when Morris served various roles on both offense and defense.

While familiarity can be advantageous, it might also raise concerns about repeating past experiences. During their previous partnership, Atlanta's defense only ranked in the top ten once for points or yards allowed.

Despite these considerations, Jeff Ulbrich remains a viable candidate due to his demonstrated ability to lead a strong defensive unit effectively.
