The Atlanta Falcons have added experienced pass rusher Leonard Floyd to their roster, anticipating a positive impact on a defense that struggled with sacks last season. Atlanta, initially limited by cap space, opted for a strategic approach in adding established talent, leading to the signing of Floyd.

Floyd reunites with Falcons' head coach Raheem Morris, with whom he collaborated during their tenure at the Los Angeles Rams, as well as working with Ryan Pace, the Falcons' vice president of football operations/player personnel since his draft in 2016. "Oh, yeah, it definitely was. It definitely was," Floyd remarked, reflecting on the significant role of his relationships with Morris and Pace in his decision to join the Falcons.

Floyd, a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, experienced a subdued start with the Chicago Bears, recording 18.5 sacks over four seasons. However, his performance surged with 48 sacks over the last five seasons, earning him the eighth spot among defenders during this period.

Morris observed Floyd's performance during their time with the Rams, particularly on critical third downs, where he secured 23.5 sacks since 2020, along with generating turnovers. In the Rams' 2021 Super Bowl campaign, Floyd's decisive plays included catalyzing a 30-27 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers through a key sack on Tom Brady, as well as a significant play against the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow.

Floyd commended Morris, saying, "He pretty much made it easy," acknowledging Morris's influence on his career. Floyd's contribution in Los Angeles, notably in collaborations with Morris, left a lasting impression. "I had some of my best, my best plays out there playing in L.A. with him. I won a ring with him in L.A. So, yeah, by far, he's one of the best I had."

As the Falcons aim to enhance their third-down defensive stats, Floyd's previous success on such plays offers promise. Last season, the Falcons ranked 31st, with key stats including a low seven third-down sacks. Floyd's adeptness in pressured moments might be a crucial boost for the team.

While acknowledging he's not at his career's peak for every down play, Floyd is set to contribute significantly as a specialist. His strong ties with Morris and Pace are expected to facilitate a quick integration into the team. "He's more than a coach. He's like a brother, father, you know," Floyd added about Morris, reinforcing his enthusiasm to reunite under familiar leadership.
