The Fulton County School Board met on Thursday, November 18, for its regularly scheduled Board meeting at the South Learning Center. Happy Thanksgiving
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, Fulton County Schools would like to say a meaningful thank you to our students for working hard every day. Thank you to our parents for trusting us with your children and thank you to our community for their continuing support. Special thanks to our talented teachers and staff for all you do for our district. Thanksgiving is a time of food, family and fun but it is important we do not forget we are still in the midst of a pandemic. Please continue to follow COVID-19 safety protocols, like social distancing and frequent hand washing, especially for those traveling during this time. Although Thanksgiving offers a much-needed break, the school year is far from over. As we head into this holiday season, we look forward to doing all we can to ensure Fulton County Schools remains a place where students come first. Have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving break.
Superintendent’s Report
COVID-19 Update
Chief Talent Officer Ron Wade presented an update on the district’s COVID-19 management efforts. He began by outlining that data extracted from the most recent Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH) Epidemiology report indicates COVID-19 cases continue trending downward. All municipalities are now under 100 cases per 100,000. He encouraged vaccinations, reminding the Board anyone five years and older can receive the COVID-19 vaccine. FCBOH has four community vaccination locations open and will be giving away $100 incentives for first and second doses through December 4 at select sites. Additionally, five thousand at-home test kits were distributed by FCS at 38 eligible schools on Wednesday, November 17. As a reminder, please continue reporting any COVID-19 related issues to the Employee and Parent portal. The Response Team will respond to parent reports after the holiday.
FCS Bridge Plan Update
Director of Federal Programs, CARES/ARP Montreal Bell provided an update on the Building the Bridge to Success plan, a multi-year plan using several federal funding sources to help address COVID-19 learning disruption and ensure the safety of students, staff, and families. Extended learning programs are well underway at almost all FCS elementary, middle and high schools and plans for Summer School 2022 officially started this week. Instructional paraprofessionals are supporting high dosage and small group tutoring in elementary schools. Many schools have partnered with tutoring companies to provide academic support to students that need it. As staff learns about the Science of Reading, research continues on the ‘Every Child Reads’ initiative. Plans are underway to expand programs to add innovative, research-based learning options for students in various learning formats including a mobile learning bus, expanding virtual learning opportunities, and expanding CTAE and high school graduation options for students. Approval of Board Member District Maps
As required by the Census, every ten years the Board of Education must adjust the areas they represent to reflect any population shifts. The new map does not change any attendance zones. It only changes which geographic areas or schools a Board member represents. Tonight, the Board took unanimous action on the approval of Board Member District Maps for submission to the Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office.
Board Policies
This month, the Board approved several policy revisions related to the district’s ATLAS implementation, the next evolution in our districtwide automated business system, which is anticipated to go live January 3, 2021. The Strategy & Governance team has worked with members of the Talent and Finance divisions to ensure current Board policies incorporate ATLAS-related changes and language. Specifically, the Board took action on the following policies:
- Board Policy DO – Disposal of School Property
- Board Policy EHC – Electronic Records
- Board Policy EHB – Records Retention and Destruction
- Board Policy and Procedure GAK – Personnel Records
- Board Policy and Procedure CN – Administration
- Board Policy CCA – System Organizational Chart
Sesquicentennial Video
The seventh episode of our sesquicentennial video series focuses on the history of sports and extracurricular activities at Fulton County Schools. While a century ago there were much fewer opportunities to participate in extracurriculars, even the earliest clubs shared common features with what is available to Fulton County students today. Extracurricular activities have provided ways for students to express pride and school spirit, compete with peers, discover common interests and talents and engage with experiences outside the classroom.
