This week, Representative Barry Loudermilk joined the entirety of Georgia's Congressional Delegation in urging President Biden to swiftly approve a request for a Major Federal Disaster Declaration. This declaration is sought to release crucial federal disaster relief funds for families, businesses, and local governments affected by Hurricane Helene.
The appeal followed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's formal request after the state's Emergency Management Agency completed a disaster assessment across Georgia. The delegation includes U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock, as well as Representatives Buddy Carter, Sanford Bishop, Drew Ferguson, Hank Johnson, Nikema Williams, Rich McCormick, Lucy McBath, Austin Scott, Andrew Clyde, Mike Collins, Rick Allen, David Scott, and Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In their letter to President Biden, the delegation expressed full support for Governor Kemp’s request: “We write to convey full support for Governor Brian Kemp’s request for an expedited major disaster declaration for the counties in the State of Georgia significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene.” They urged prompt consideration of the request and offered readiness to collaborate with the administration on recovery efforts.
Governor Kemp requested public assistance across numerous counties including Appling, Atkinson, Bacon among others. Additionally requested was individual assistance for specific counties like Ben Hill and Berrien. He also sought an increase in federal cost share under Sections 403 and 407 of the Stafford Act due to Hurricane Helene.
